Research summary
The proposed study aims to investigate young peoples’ and parents’/carers’ experiences of interventions that use session by session rating scales (SRS) in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), and gain further understanding of how the SRS may impact on the therapeutic alliance.
Clinicians from five CAMHS teams in Cheshire have volunteered to pilot the use of SRS with their clients. SRS are new outcome monitoring told being introduced to clinicians in this locality. SRS requires the client to complete a feedback form at the end of each therapeutic session, which is then reviewed and discussed by the client and the therapist. This study aims to gain further understanding of how the clients experience this new monitoring process, how it impacts upon the therapeutic alliance during therapy, and what the strengths and weaknesses of this new monitoring process are for the client. The findings will provide valuable information from the perspective of service users to inform future practice.
The participants for this study will consist of young people and parents/carers who have completed a minimum of 3 SRS (for the first recruitment phase) of 1 SRS (for the second recruitment phase). Participants will be aged 12 and above. Participants will be from one of five CAMHS services across the Cheshire area. Participant’s cases will be open to their CAMHS service at the time of data collection.
Data will be collected using semi-structured interviews. Each interview will last approximately 30 minutes. The semi-scheduled interview schedule will address the following four key areas; feasibility of the SRS, validity, rationale, and therapeutic progress. Interviews will take place on an NHS site or at the participants home. A choice of NHS locations will be put to the participant. Interviews will be analysed using Thematic Analysis.REC name
