Research summary
Understanding how young people and adults value their oral health is an important consideration. Having awareness of their values can help individuals receive dental care in a way that is best for them. It can also help support the development of dental care interventions for the wider public.
Currently, there is only one tool that has been developed and tested to measure oral health values of dental patients. The 'Oral Health Values scale' was developed in the United States of America (US) and designed for use in adults only. It is a questionnaire that is formed of several tested questions to help understand how much value an adult place on their oral health. Currently, there is no tool that is specifically for use in adult or young people in the United Kingdom (UK). The current tool might or might not be useful for these groups. Instead of developing a new tool for young people and adults in the UK, it is our intention to see whether the current US tool could potentially work in these groups.
Three hundred young people (12-18-years-old) and three hundred adults (19-65-years old) will be invited to complete an online questionnaire, that includes the 'Oral Health Values scale' questionnaire. They will be invited as part of their dental visit to one regional dental hospital, or via a social media campaign. They will only need to complete the questionnaire once. The completed questionnaires will be analysed. The information collected will either validate the current tool for use in young people and/or adults in the UK. If not, then future research would involve developing a tool that is specific for these groups.REC name
