  • Research summary

National Maternity Surveys (NMS) have been carried out in the UK by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit since 1995. The NMS provide information about the health and care of women and babies during pregnancy, labour and birth, and early parenthood, which contributes to the improvement of maternity services across the UK. Another NMS is planned for 2020 to provide up-to-date information on the health and care of women and babies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over time, the number of women responding to the NMS has fallen. This means that the findings from the women who do respond may be less relevant to the general population of women giving birth. In the 2020 NMS we are inviting women to take part using three different methods, and we will evaluate each of these to find out how best to encourage women to take part.

The 2020 NMS will include women aged 16 years and over, who have a current address in the UK, and who gave birth in the UK in March-August during the Covid-19 pandemic. Women will be invited to take part in the study through three routes:

1.Identified through birth registrations in England by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and sent a paper questionnaire
2.Identified through birth registrations in England by the ONS and sent an invitation to an online questionnaire
3.Self-identified through adverts on social media websites and directed to an online questionnaire.

We will invite 16,000 women through ONS and reach as many women as possible through social media. The survey will provide unique information about the health and care of women and babies during the Covid-19 pandemic and also important insight on the best methods for collecting NMS data.

The study is funded by the Policy Research Programme at the Department of Health and Social Care.
