  • Research summary

The study seeks to find out if taking part in pregnancy yoga classes helps women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). The study will test ideas and gather evidence to help plan future research.

30 women with GDM will be recruited to the study over a period of 3-4 months. The study will take place in Blackburn and Burnley. Participants will be recruited through the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT). Women will be invited to attend 16 free yoga classes over a period of eight weeks. All participants will be asked to complete questionnaires before and after the yoga classes. This should provide information on whether the yoga classes reduces stress and improves wellbeing in the women taking part in the study. 10 women will also take part in an interview before the yoga sessions have started and then again after the yoga sessions have finished. Women taking part in the interviews will be asked to consider their thoughts and feelings about the yoga and describe any benefits or challenges to taking part in the yoga sessions. Participants will be asked to consider if any changes could be made to the structure, content, accessibility of the yoga sessions. Information from the interviews will be used to help plan future yoga classes for women with GDM and assist researchers planning further research. Researchers from Edge Hill are working with health professionals from ELHT on this project.
