Research summary
The aim of this project is to develop an innovative diagnostic technology that will allow early identification of patients whose wounds will fail to heal normally over time. Early diagnoses will allow the use of specialist treatments and wound care products at an earlier stage, to patients that require them. Ten patients will be recruited and their wound classified as "healing" or "non-healing", by subjective assessment of the clinician, and fluid from their wound will be collected by one of the following methods depending on the level of fluid from their wound:
1. Low exuding wounds - swabbing the surface of the wound allowing the tip of the swab to become saturated in wound fluid
2. Medium - High exuding wounds - placing wound filer paper onto the wound surface until they become saturated in wound fluid, usually 10-15 minutes
3 Patients who are already having negative pressure wound therapy will be asked to allow the fluid that is already being collected in the negative pressure canister to be used for research purposes rather than disposed of as clinical waste.
This is the full extent of patient participation in the study.
The fluid collected will be anonomysed and sent to the laboratory for analysis.REC name
