  • Research summary

Title: What are the challenges and facilitators to joint-working and referral to paediatric palliative care specialists for healthcare professionals?

Why? Referral to children's palliative care is variable across the UK and within the local area. This means some children who may benefit from palliative care involvement are not given the opportunity as they are not referred. Palliative care input for patients with life-threatened or life-limited conditions can help with symptom control, parallel planning and 'total' care.

What? The views of health professionals who are able to refer to palliative care are being sought. We will explore current challenges and facilitators to referral locally.

Who? Paediatric healthcare professionals working within a tertiary hospital will be invited to take part. We hope to get a cross section of different sub-specialties.

Where? Health professionals from a tertiary paediatric hospital in the UK and the associated children's hospice.

How? Virtual (online) focus groups of 4-10 professionals will be held March-June 2020, up to seven groups in total. Participants will be asked their current views and involvement in paediatric palliative care, using case scenarios to inform discussion. All data will be qualitative. Thematic analysis of transcripts will be performed.
