Research summary
Researchers at the University of East Anglia are looking for parents/carers of children with an acquired brain injury to help with co-designing a novel approach for sharing experiences following their child’s injury. We know that people who are hospitalised recover better when all of their needs – psychological, social and medical – are looked after, not just their medical needs. We also know that parents/carers of children with ABI have unique experiences above and beyond those directly linked to their injured child and that these experiences can be difficult for them to make sense of or talk about. This novel approach will involve participants using creative materials comprising of wool and stones of different colours, textures and sizes to tell their stories. We are interested in the stories that arise using this novel approach and whether participants find the approach helpful. This study is an initial step in co-designing, with the help of potential service users, an intervention to support parents/carers following child brain injury. Eligible participants will have a child whose brain injury was sustained at least 18 months ago and who was aged 2 to 19 years at the time of their injury. Participation in the study will involve two interviews, each lasting between 45 and 90 minutes. This study is being sponsored by the University of East Anglia and will be supported by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust.
