  • Research summary

There is a high prevalence of women who experience pelvic pain. This can be defined as pain in the lower abdomen and can be a result of a variety of health and psychological issues and can have a profound effect of the general well-being of women (Zondervan et al, 1999). Therefore, the research proposed will focus on attempting to understand women’s experiences of pelvic pain and the impact it has on their lives, including their experience of seeking help. The women will be recruited from a Pelvic Pain Management Programme and will be invited to be interviewed after completion of the programme in order to gain an understanding of their opinion of the programme as well as the effects it has had on their lives. Further to this, the interviews will aim to determine the women’s opinions of the health care system in relation to pelvic pain. The women will be invited to a second interview 3 months after completion of the programme as well in order to attempt to understand their long term pain establish the longer term effects of the programme. The qualitative data obtained could provide important information about how women themselves conceptualise pelvic pain and what influences them to seek help. This could potentially help shape health services with regards to pelvic pain.
