  • Research summary

The primary aim of this feasibility study is to gather essential data to inform the design, conduct, and analysis of a study of sufficient sample size to investigate the association between levels daily activities (physical activity and sedentary behaviour) during pregnancy, and labour and delivery outcomes.

Pregnant women with a straightforward pregnancy under midwifery-led care will be handed an invitation pack at their 16 week antenatal appointment by community midwives within the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Participants will be asked to complete four questionnaires. The first three, around weeks 16, 24, and 36 weeks of pregnancy, will focus on women’s daily activities (physical activity and sedentary behaviour). The final questionnaire, to be completed by participants soon after the birth of their baby, will ask about the labour and birth. We will also use pedometres to measure women’s steps and use delivery data recorded in the Electronic Patient Record.

Half of the participants will be asked to complete the questionnaires in an electronic format and the other half will be sent the questionnaires in paper format. We will compare the number returned of each format, and demographic characteristics of women recruited and retained in the study using each method.

We will also test two different incentive strategies for improving recruitment and retention in the study. Half of the participants will be offered a guaranteed £10 gift voucher for every questionnaire they return. The other half will be offered entry into a prize draw for a £100 gift voucher if they return all four questionnaires.

Lastly, all participants will be invited to take part in a focus group at the end of the study to feedback to the research team their experiences of taking part. We will select 8-10 participants in total from those who completed all questionnaires and those who did not.
