  • Research summary

This research aims to explore the experiences of female patients suffering from depression during the interwar period (1923-1938). To be specific, it would reveal how the depressed women understood their disease, how they explained the origin of their disturbance, and how they related their disorder to major life events and experiences, through their narratives in the case notes. The patients' view also will be read in comparison with professional understanding and standpoint on depression. For this research, a series of medical records of the Maudsley Hospital between 1923 and 1938 will be used as main sources.
