Research summary
At present automatic physiological data collection requires the patient to be ‘wired’ to a monitor, with the consequent restriction on activity. The proposed study will evaluate a new method of automatically obtaining physiological data (ward observations or “obs”) using a novel monitoring system that has been developed as part of a TSB (Innovate) funded Biomedical Catalyst grant. The monitoring system to be evaluated in this study has been designed to be continuously worn by the patient and transmit information.
As part of the evaluation of the wearable monitoring system the transmission of information needs to be tested and user feedback obtained to cycle into any design modifications before further testing. There is also the need to test the feasibility of the parallel collection of data by the conventional system and the new wearable monitor to inform the design of future clinical trials. This study will be performed to obtain feedback from volunteers, patients and staff in order to improve the design of the monitor and to inform a future clinical study.
