Research summary
Recently in the UK, increasing numbers of adults are seeking orthodontic (brace) treatment. Currently, there is little provision for adult orthodontic treatment on the NHS. There is a UK trend for adults to seek less visible braces. There is also some debate about who should undertake the treatment (general dentist or specialist orthodontist).
This survey-based study is designed to investigate how the adult general population and dental professionals value adult orthodontics and aspects of the delivery of care. There are four separate aims to this study:
Part 1: (potential adult NHS service)
1. Establishing how adults would value an adult orthodontic NHS-funded service
2. Exploring how the dental profession would value an NHS adult orthodontic servicePart 2: (current private service)
3. Establishing whether the type dental professional undertaking treatment influences adults’ values
4. Establishing whether the type of orthodontic brace influences adults’ values. The study will be undertaken in a dental practice setting, in selected practices in the North East and Cumbria (England). Adults attending for their appointments (age 18 and above), who speak English language, can consent for themselves and are happy to take part in the study will be given a participant information leaflet by a member of the practice reception team. Two researchers will be available at each practice on research days to answer any questions. A 20 minute questionnaire will then be completed by the participant on a tablet computer. The survey will cover demographic and dental history details. The main aspect of the survey will be determining value using the willingness- to- pay approach, which asks participants the maximum they would be willing to pay, hypothetically, for different scenarios.
