Research summary
There is little current research exploring how patients value orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment within the NHS is rationed using an index of treatment need (IOTN). It is unclear whether the IOTN is a good indicator of how patients perceive orthodontic treatment need. This study aims to explore how people value the orthodontic correction of malocclusions (misaligned teeth)in financial values. There are standardised methods of eliciting values and the method of willingness-to-pay (WTP), a standard technique in health economics, is the most appropriate in this study.
We propose asking the parents of patients attending dental and general orthodontic departments over three different hospitals to complete a WTP questionnaire. The questionnaire will include participant demographics, previous experience of orthodontic treatment and explore WTP for seven different scenarios using photographs of different malocclusions. These scenarios have been selected to represent different aspects of the IOTN e.g. crowded or sticking out teeth.
We will explore the average financial values for correcting different aspects of malocclusions and investigate how all of the different demographic and orthodontic factors interact with each other to influence WTP.
These results will be beneficial in informing decisions regarding the provision of orthodontic treatment.
