  • Research summary

People diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) report high levels of disparity in the ways in which they receive and understand their diagnosis. Whilst the diagnosis may result in treatment for some, for others it means stigma, discrimination and exclusion from services. Individuals diagnosed with EUPD can find themselves striving for clear, accurate information and experiencing a varying and often reduced sense of belonging in society. This study aims to explore experiences of receiving the diagnosis of EUPD and subsequent impact. An in-depth understanding of this lived experience will be sought through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of interviews with participants who are navigating their diagnosis and are involved in services at the time.
We hope that the findings will be shaped into some recommendations that professionals can use when providing this diagnosis in the future.
