Research summary
The aim of this research project is to observe and ask questions about the process paramedics go through when making a decision about pain relief before taking the patient to hospital.
Pain is a common symptom of people who call an ambulance, with many patients reporting pain which could be relieved by the paramedic giving appropriate drugs. In spite of this, reports from a UK based good quality study shows that pain management before arriving at hospital is not as good as it could be. The Ambulance Association of Chief Executives (2016) recognise that the management of pain by pre-hospital paramedics needs to improve.
Qualified and trained paramedics have a variety of pain relief drugs that they can give safely before the patient is taken to hospital. This study will be to collect data about decision making by paramedics when working with a patient in pain. The researcher is an experienced trainer of paramedics who is intending to work shifts with 10 different paramedics as an observer. The researcher is extra to the normal ambulance team, he will make observations and take notes without being seen by the patient or any ordinary member of the public. After the incident in a private place the researcher will ask the paramedic questions about their decision-making to give pain relief.REC name
