Research summary
The current study will bring together the perspectives of young autistic people (suspected or formally diagnosed with autism), carers of autistic people and healthcare professionals working with eating disorders and representing a wide range of eating disorder services, to better understand their treatment experiences and what they wished they had known or had in place when starting their treatment journeys.
This present study will therefore seek to build on previous literature. Although studies have shed light in this area, there is limited evidence on experiences of younger people accessing outpatient eating disorder services. Existing studies have only explored the views of autistic females, and therefore, this study will seek to explore views of treatment held by autistic men, as well as non-binary and transgender individuals. This can inform specific treatment adaptations to better understand the complex needs of the wider autistic population with eating disorders.
