  • Research summary

Staff in forensic settings experience a wide number of stressful events that may impact their well-being. For example, witnessing violence, being a victim of violence towards themselves, and supporting people who self-harm or complete suicide. Some staff manage these events differently than others, with some experiencing negative effects, such as poor mental health and burn out whilst others seem to not be affected. The research aims to understand the reasons for the different responses and what factors influence this. Are there links between what we do in our daily lives, our life satisfaction and our ability to manage challenging events? Off-job crafting has been proposed in occupational settings as a protective factor that allows staff to recover outside of work and respond positively to difficult events within work. The research would like to explore the connection between off-job crafting and the job resources demand model and how this correlates with staff well-being, life satisfaction and job satisfaction. Research in this area is important to help the service become more compassionate and understanding of staff needs and improve support strategies. The research will support understanding the needs of staff teams, with the ultimate goal being staff retention and staff and service user well-being.
