Research summary
The research aims to investigate what expectations young people hold about young people’s mental health services. Currently very little is known about the expectations young people hold. The research was identified jointly by Dr Ian Rushton, 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and Laura Smith, Trainee Clinical Psychologist and will allow for the development of information leaflets to address some of the questions and concerns young people may have before entering the service. It will assist the service to engage more effectively with young people, and meet young people’s expectations. The study will recruit a maximum of ten young people, who have has no previous CAMHS input. Young people will not be excluded based upon the reason for referral, with the exception of those referred following a hospital admission for deliberate self harm, in recognition of the emotional distress potential participants may be experiencing. The research will take place within 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust CAMHS services. The project aims to be completed by September 2014. Participants will be recruited from the referrals received by CAMHS teams. Information about the study will be sent to participants at various opportunities. Young people will take part in an interview lasting 60-90 minutes and will have the opportunity to have their parent/carer present at the interview. The study is a qualitative design, using thematic analysis to analyse the data. A report will be submitted as per the course requirement, and a dissemination strategy has been developed regarding publication and dissemination within 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
