Research summary
Psychogenic syncope, or fainting, is a condition which may involve a temporary loss of consciousness, loss of postural tone, rapid onset, and complete recovery, but which has no known medical cause. It is relatively under-researched in terms of understanding it from the patient’s perspective. Studies have found psychological distress and reduced quality of life in this patient group, and the process of diagnosis is known to be difficult. Overall, there is limited knowledge about the patient’s perspective of living with psychogenic syncope. This study aims to describe the experience of patients diagnosed with psychogenic syncope, their illness perceptions, and experience of a psychogenic syncope diagnosis.
