  • Research summary

Accurate evaluation of patient activity status is key in follow up of patients with advanced cancer. Clinician assessments are valuable but only occur only when the patient attends clinic. Activity trackers give the opportunity to objectively assess activity status remotely, independent of clinic visits. Previous studies have shown that a reduction in steps while receiving treatment for cancer is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization but it is not known if using information from activity trackers and reviewing a patient in an ambulatory setting if steps decrease can reduce admission to hospital and improve outcome.

This is a prospective single center study in patients with advanced lung cancer or gastrointestinal cancers to investigate the feasibility in an NHS hospital of monitoring activity levels with a wearable activity tracker and using this data to trigger an ambulatory review if a reduction in steps is detected.

Secondary aims are to assess the acceptability and utility of remote activity tracking. Exploratory aims are to assess the effects of activity levels on muscle mass and function.

Patients starting a new drug treatment for cancer will be approached and asked to wear an activity tracker for at least 7 days prior to starting treatment. Participants will be monitored for 4 months or the duration of their treatment, whichever is the shortest.

A reduction of >1000 daily steps from baseline on the activity tracker will trigger contact by a member of the research team and prompt an invitation to attend the hospital for an ambulatory review.
