Research summary
Following stroke a significant proportion of patients have problems while walking around environments; they take veering paths and bump into objects. There is some evidence that this is a result of an error in perception of visual straight-ahead. It is possible to experimentally shift visual straight-ahead. A simple and cost effective way to do this is with prism glasses. This pilot study will assess the relationship between perceived straight-ahead and walking trajectories of patients with stroke. Trajectories will be measured with and without prism glasses. This will allow us to explore the feasibility and utility of prescribing "walking glasses" to patients with stroke. If the results are positive then this should pave the way for a later full clinical study to investigate the use of “walking glasses” to aid patients with stroke.
