  • Data collection arrangements

The Wales Kidney Research Tissue Bank will collect the following samples, together or separately:
    Residual kidney biopsy
    Peritoneal membrane
    Blood
    Urine
    Peritoneal dialysis effluent
    Omentum
    Saliva
Anonymous clinical data related to specific studies will be collected: Renal diagnosis and clinical correlates of disease severity and risk of chronic kidney disease progression will be recorded, including, age, sex, ethnicity, blood pressure, serum creatinine, estimated GFR, serum albumin, urine protein to creatinine ratio.
Patients will be given an information sheet explaining the purpose of the tissue bank and will have time to ask questions before taking a decision and signing a consent form. They will give permission to give clinical information, allow DNA work, distribution of their samples to other institution and possibility of being contacted for further studies.

  • Research programme

The samples will be collected and available for use in research studying the causes, identification and treatment of kidney disease. The main aim of this tissue bank is to facilitate translation of relevant in vitro findings "from bench to bedside" by enabling study of expression of novel biomarkers of renal disease, and confirmation of in vitro findings pertaining to mechanisms of disease. Studies of expression of potential biomarkers in those with specific clinical conditions leading to kidney disease, or the risk of kidney disease. The aim of such studies will be to: i.) Assist development of less invasive diagnostic tests ii.) Improve diagnostic/prognostic accuracy by assisting the development of new tests that improve on our current gold standards for categorizing renal disease, and determining prognosis in those with kidney disease. iii.) Provide mechanistic understanding of kidney disease, by testing the validity of predictions from our in vitro mechanistic studies of chronic kidney disease, with the ultimate aim of assisting development of novel therapies for kidney disease.
