  • Research summary

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a cascade of physical, social, and psychological difficulties across the UK. It has led to a nationwide lockdown, school closures, and the halting of unessential services. This situation is unprecedented, and it is not clear how this will affect the mental health and well-being of the population.

In order to meet the needs of the population during the current circumstances, mental health services within the NHS need to: (1) understand the extent to which Covid-19 has impacted the well-being of the population; (2) identify the factors that are negatively impacting the well-being of the population; and (3) identify which subdivisions of the community are experiencing the most severe difficulties with their well-being. This information can be used to plan future services and evaluate what additional services need to be provided by the NHS to meet these needs.

This research aims to administer a 10-15 minute survey across the population of Wales in individuals aged 16 or above. We will examine the prevalence and impact of various Covid-19 related stressors and evaluate the levels of well-being, psychological distress and resilience in the population using established psychometric measures. Measures of well-being and psychological distress will be compared to measures obtained prior to the Covid-19 crisis by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and will be followed up over the next 60 months.

This survey will be able to track the well-being of individuals over-time as the Covid-19 crisis progresses. We will be able to analyse data on an ‘All Wales’ basis, and also evaluate outcomes on a more granular basis (e.g. on the level of each Health Board in Wales). This data should help each Health Board and Local Authority be responsive to local needs.
