  • Research summary

Technology is continually developing and it is imperative that we make the most of these new advances in medical education as well as in the wider context of the NHS. Advancements in virtual reality have led to more immersive and realistic programmes being developed to aid learning. Our Trust was funded by Health Education England for the purchase of the Oxford Medical Simulation (OMS) Virtual Reality Head-Mounted Device and software. The software simulates clinical scenarios and assesses the management of an acutely unwell or deteriorating patient. Published literature into virtual reality so far suggests a positive education impact. However we want to explore specifically how the head-mounted display form of virtual reality can be applied and delivered in Blackpool Victoria Hospital to enhance medical education. A systematic review on the use of head-mounted device in medical education is currently being performed by the authoring team prior to commencing study to ensure that the study is following current recommendation from medical literature. During this time we plan to run a small pilot study to look at the practicalities of using the system in the Trust. We will be specifically assessing the OMS system, using a knowledge assessment, attitude questionnaire and Likert scale. We will focus particularly on the clinical scenarios which are in keeping with the trust priorities based upon our recent Summary Hospital Mortality Indicators (SHMI) and areas with previous difficulties in clinical management.
