Research summary
In clinical research, advisory groups often provide membership for both patients and members of the public in order to generate a collection of people interested in getting involved in the research process, rather than as a participant of research itself.
There is a need for research institutions to develop patient and/or public advisory groups to inform the research process, however, there is a lack of literature describing how such groups have been developed successfully to meet the needs of their members and to provide meaningful involvement.
This study aims to recruit up to 24 people from three different respiratory specialities (chronic cough, food allergy and aspergillosis) to take part in focus groups discussions. The overarching aim of this study is to understand how patient advisory groups might work with researchers in each specialty in order to develop a meaningful advisory group that has been created to suit the needs of the patients themselves.
