  • Research summary

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can provide detailed images of most parts of the body. It is for example extensively used in cancer or brain imaging.
We are collaborating with clinicians that would be interested in using the technique to image the upper vocal tract and in particular, the soft palate and associated musculature. This is challenging as the musculature is small and the presence of air makes it more difficult. Furthermore, dynamic imaging during speech would also be required thus increasing the difficulty. It is usual to first develop, optimise and validate new MRI techniques on healthy participants before using it in patients. We will also ensure that the data we can acquire using the new methodology is suitable for automatic analysis using artificial intelligence techniques.
