Research summary
The relationship between vitamin D (vD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) has been highly researched. Epidemiological studies demonstrate a relationship between low serum vD levels and increased MS risk.
There is currently no data around the variation in serum vD across the UK in people with MS. This study aims to accurately map vD levels in people with MS and matched healthy controls across the UK. We will recruit using the MS register, and test vD levels remotely using dried blood spots. We will examine the association between vD levels and both non-MS-related and MS-related variables. We will examine the genes of participants that have been associated with vitamin D levels and MS in order to assess the role that an individual’s genes have on their vD status. We will examine the feasibility and practicality of remote testing of both vitamin D levels and genetic variation.REC name
