Research summary
Vitamin D levels are associated with an increased risk of heart attack. Patients who have had a heart attack are known to have worse blood vessel function throughout the body, and this is thought to increase the risk of a future heart attack. There is some evidence in other patient groups that vitamin D supplementation may be able to reduce blood pressure and improve blood vessel function. We will test the effect of vitamin D on blood vessel function and blood pressure in patients who have had a heart attack. Participants will receive a large dose of vitamin D or placebo every two months - at baseline, 2 months and 4 months. We will measure blood pressure, cholesterol, blood markers of heart and blood vessel function, and we will test blood vessel function directly by measuring blood flow in the fingertips. If vitamin D can improve blood vessel function, it may be useful as a way of reducing further heart attacks in those who have had a heart attack.
