Research summary
The standard way of measuring vitamin B12 in the blood does not tell us very accurately if there is a healthy amount in the body. The diabetic tablet, Metformin, is known to reduce B12 levels in diabetic patients.\nThe aim of this study is to determine if other ways of measuring B12 can provide better evidence that there is a healthy amount of the vitamin in the body by looking at blood results taken from 200 adults with diabetes and on metformin, attending hospital clinics in the Belfast trust.\n200 adult diabetic patients attending clinics in two hospitals in Belfast will have blood analysed for levels of B12 by three different methods in the laboratory. The results will help us see if there would be a difference in the number of people told they have deficiency of the vitamin, depending on which way it is measured.
