  • Research summary

    Summary of Research
Colecalciferol (vitamin D) is commonly used for the treatment and prevention of vitamin D deficiency in children. However, the optimum dose of colecalciferol to use in children is unclear. There is a lack of agreement among doctors and guideline committees, and the many different preparations on the market, with doses ranging from 400 IU/day to 40,000 IU/week, adds further confusion to the problem.

Using specialist computer software, the aim of VIT-D PK-PD study is to develop new models to improve our understanding of how children handle colecalciferol, to help us discover if we can improve the dosing regimens used for children in the future. The study population will involve children who need colecalciferol as part of their normal NHS care, and who also need blood tests. Therefore the VIT-D PK-PD study can be done without the need for any extra invasive procedures, and there will be no change to the medication therapy received by participants.

    Summary of Results
N/A - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the study was paused at all participating sites for a significant amount of time. The study was therefore terminated early before target recruitment was reached. The data collected was insufficient for the planned data analyses.
