Research summary
Vitamin D & Parathyroid hormone (PTH) blood levels are routinely collected in many units caring for patients with hip fractures. It is well recognised that low Vitamin D and high PTH are a risk factor for the initial fracture and predispose to further fractures. There is also some evidence that suggest that low vitamin D and high PTH levels are associated with frailty and disability but there has been no study into outcome measures such as length of stay and greater level of dependence following discharge from acute hospital. Our study is a retrospective analysis of the data that is routinely available to support improved multidisciplinary and medical input if the data seems to predict poor outcomes. Future patients could be targeted with specific rehabilitation measures with a view to improving patient outcome and improving patient’s pathways of care.
