Research summary
When individuals who have never previously required a correction for their vision (“functional emmetropes”) reach the age of approximately 40 to 50 years of age, they generally require a correction for near vision (presbyopia). In these cases, the conventional approach is to prescribe near vision spectacles, office spectacles and sometimes progressive spectacles. It is unfortunate that many eye care practitioners do not typically offer contact lenses as an alternative or adjunct modality for vision correction; however, these “functional emmetropic” presbyopes could be ideal contact lens candidates because they have never used any modality of vision correction and therefore do not need to be converted from spectacle wear to contact lens wear. Presbyopic contact lens correction offers many advantages and appears to be the ideal correction modality to address the drawbacks associated with presbyopic spectacle lens wear, offering clear vision in all directions of gaze, avoiding the need to modify head posture behavior and eliminating any external sign of near vision correction.
The purpose of the study is to determine how well individuals who have never been prescribed contact lenses or spectacles, but who require a correction for near vision, adjust to wearing CE marked, VISTAKON® multifocal contact lenses that are disposed of on a daily disposable basis.
The study investigators will perform some examinations on participants’ eyes, and participants will be asked to rate the performance of the study lenses during a two month period of lens wear. The study will be conducted at three sites, one in the United Kingdom, one in France and one in the United States. It is sponsored by Johnson and Johnson Vision Care Inc.
