Research summary
Infantile nystagmus is a visual disorder characterised by involuntary eye movements. The incessant movement of the eyes causes long-term impairments in vision. Though most prior work has focussed on deficits in visual acuity (our ability to see fine detail), recent work has demonstrated that vision in nystagmus is also limited by visual crowding – a phenomenon where objects that are visible in isolation become indistinguishable in clutter.
Our aim is to understand the development of these deficits in visual acuity and crowding in children with infantile nystagmus syndrome. To this end, we will examine the visual deficits of children with infantile nystagmus between the ages of 3-12, with specific comparison of the deficits in two sub-types of infantile nystagmus: those with associated albinism and those with idiopathic infantile nystagmus (of no known functional origin). We will also compare these deficits with those of adults with idiopathic and albinism-associated nystagmus.
