Research summary
This study aims to investigate patients’ experiences of appearance-concern and post-traumatic stress following a burn injury, and whether there is any interaction between these. It is hoped that by developing understanding of this potential link, clinical treatment of these psychological difficulties can be improved; for example by improving assessment and considering how well current models of post-traumatic stress account for appearance-related cognitions or avoidance behaviours. Participation will involve completing an hour-long, semi-structured interviews and completing three questionnaires (a demographics questionnaire, the Impact of Events Scale-Revised and the Derriford Appearance Scale). This will take place either in Nottingham Burns Units or participants own homes. A maximum number of fifteen participants will be required. All adults who have experienced a non-superficial burn and have been treated by Nottingham Burns Unit within the last eighteen months will be eligible for the study.
