  • Research summary

The aim of the study is to establish whether DOAC-stop reagent can successfully neutralise direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patient’s pre-operative assessment coagulation samples, therefore removing the requirement of a patient to stop their anticoagulant therapy prior to pre-operative assessment and reduce the need for further specialist coagulation testing due to interference from DOACs.
The advantages of this would be patient safety as the patients would not have to stop their DOACs before their preoperative assessment, reduce cancellations of patients’ surgery reducing the risk of harm caused to patients due to delays and reduce the workload for the haematology department as specialised tests would not need to be undertaken within a quick turnaround time.
