Research summary
Older people are more vulnerable to an adverse hospital outcome (Jarrett et al., 1995), and the Francis enquiry has emphasised the need to improve the quality of NHS care for the elderly. To this end, the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Centre for Quality Improvement (CCQI) has launched a quality assurance program called “The Quality Mark for Elder-Friendly Hospital Wards”. Participation in this program helps services to focus on improving the care provided for people aged 65+, and patient feedback is a key component in the assessment of their ’elder-friendliness’. This information is collected through a patient feedback questionnaire that has been specifically developed for the Quality Mark program. This study aims to gather evidence for the validity, reliability and acceptability of this questionnaire, so we can be confident that it provides robust evidence about the patient’s experience of care on a ward.
Patients aged 65 or above will be recruited from ten general hospital acute wards in Imperial College Health Care NHS. Participants will be asked to fill in a questionnaire pack including the Quality Mark Questionnaire (QMQ) that is being evaluated, and two instruments against which its performance can be compared - the Picker Patient Experience Questionnaire (PPE-15) and the Friends and Family test. To evaluate the reliability of the QMQ over time (’test-retest’ reliability), participants will be asked to complete it a second time, two days after completing the questionnaire pack. Validity of the QMQ will be tested by correlating its average total score with that of the validated PPE-15 and the widely used ’Friends & Family Test’. The data will be collected over a 10-week period.
