Research summary
The objective of the research is to determine the validity and repeatability of a questionnaire (Care and Comfort Hypertonicity questionnaire) that is used clinically to assess levels of comfort, ease of personal care tasks, positioning, transfers, mobility, interaction with others and emotional well being.
There exist two different versions of the questionnaire: The questions are all the same but one is scored using a 7 point Likert scale and the other using a 4 point Likert scale. The preferred choice clinically is the 4 point scale because firstly fewer options may make the selection easier for respondents and secondly this provides no middle option (which can often be defaulted to and a way of not making a decision if unsure).
1. Validity: the 7 point Likert scale has previously been validated and therefore it will be used as a benchmark for comparison. If the 2 different scales yield the same results and functional conclusions (from the same participants to the same questions) then the convergence between the 2 scales will indicate validity of the 4 point scale.
2. Repeatability will be assessed by asking participants to complete the questionnaire on 2 different occasions 2 weeks apart. This is long enough for answers to not be remembered, but it is unlikely to be long enough for the object of assessment (symptoms and behaviours being observed) to have genuinely changed.REC name
