  • Research summary

An earlier phase study developed a new clinical outcome measure called the Arthritis Research UK Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire (MSK-HQ). The main aims of this study are to assess the validity, reliability and responsiveness of the MSK-HQ when used in patients with musculoskeletal problems.

This application specifically refers to the testing of the MSK-HQ in a physiotherapy setting, which is being led by a team at Keele University in collaboration with the Oxford team.

Eligible adult patients (<=18yrs) will be invited to participate (n=200) by the physiotherapist responsible for their musculoskeletal treatment at their first out-patient appointment. At the initial visit consenting individuals will be asked to complete a questionnaire containing: clinical descriptive characteristics (e.g. age, gender, work status, and main presenting problem such as back, knee or shoulder pain), along with the MSK-HQ and an existing validated quality of life measure (EQ-5D-5L). In order to examine test re-test reliability when patients return for their second consultation (typically a week or two later) they will be asked to complete the MSK-HQ again. A follow up postal questionnaire will be sent by Oxford University three months after their initial appointment to examine the responsiveness of the MSK-HQ.

The patient’s treatment will not be affected in any way and the analysis will examine the performance of the new outcome measure, using anonymized pooled data from this cohort.

The study is jointly funded by Arthritis Research UK and NHS England.
