  • Research summary

Unnecessary interventions in labour impact on long term physical and emotional health of women. The Birthplace study that evaluated policy initiatives of choice of birth environments to reduce interventions in labour, raised important questions about the implementation of evidence in all environments for birth. The need to systematically measure skills that reduce interventions was proposed. Valid and reliable tools to measure such skills are lacking.

This study assess the content validity of the Keeping Birth Normal tool developed to observe and support the development of skills in keeping birth normal where it is lacking. The content is assessed using 20 experts and includes clinical, academics and women user representatives. A 4- point scale of relevance is used to assess the items under domains that describe care based on evidence that reduce interventions.

A Content Validity Index (CVI) will be calculated. The content validity index represents the degree to which the tool has an appropriate sample of items for domains being measured. Content will be refined using the scale, data on omissions, clarity and comprehension. Experts will review the tool before it is judged content valid
