Research summary
Tinnitus is a very common condition affecting 10-15% of the population. There is little is known about the causes of tinnitus and limited therapies available. Tinnitus is often managed in patients rather than being treated to improve their state. This study, aims to improve our understanding of tinnitus by identifying where it is generated in the brain. This will be done by examining the brain of patients with tinnitus using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and comparing it to the brain of healthy volunteers. It is anticipated that the results from this study could potentially lead on to a larger multicentre tinnitus study which could allow targeted treatments to be developed.
