Research summary
The proposed project will seek to obtain blood samples from patients in critical care who are showing no evidence of a systemic inflammatory response (SIRS)based on the absence of internationally recognised clinical signs (the SIRS criteria). These samples will be used as controls for ongoing studies investigating the potential usefulness of circulating biomarkers for rapid differential diagnosis of patients with an inflammatory response driven by infection (sepsis) from patients with a sterile systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) or patients with no inflammatory response. Samples will also be used for biomarker assay development and optimisation within the context of this study
