  • Research summary

This study aims to find out how pregnant women feel about vaccination during pregnancy, including Covid-19 vaccination and vaccinations routinely offered in pregnancy. We want to find out what midwives think pregnant women feel about having vaccinations in pregnancy, and some experiences they have had when offering vaccinations.
Pregnant women are at high risk of illness from infections (flu and whooping cough) due to changes to their body, and are routinely offered vaccinations for these. Not all pregnant women decide to vaccinate, and are often unsure of how necessary or safe vaccinations are. Pregnant women are offered the Covid-19 vaccination because of the risk of becoming very ill from Covid-19, which can also make their baby very ill. We need to explore why not all women have vaccinations so uptake can be improved.
We will ask pregnant women how they feel about vaccinations during pregnancy (including views about safety and effectiveness) and if their views have been affected by Covid-19. We will talk to midwives to help us understand how pregnant women feel about having Covid-19 vaccination.
We have listened to 14 pregnant women who helped us generate research questions and aims of the study. They advised that what we want to study will make a difference to their health and wellbeing. We will consult with pregnant women throughout the study, so that what we do and findings are useful for pregnant women, and those using maternity services. We have a member of the public, who has helped us to complete this application, and will be working with us throughout the project.
We will publish findings in academic journals and develop factsheets and learning materials to assist healthcare professionals in supporting pregnant women in having vaccinations. A one-page factsheet will be made for participants and pregnant women to summarise findings.
