Research summary
A uterine septum is a congenital (from birth) abnormality if the uterus (womb) where the cavity is fully or partially divided into two separate parts because of an abnormal central piece of uterine tissue. The septate uterus is the most common uterine anomaly with an estimated prevalence of 2-3% in women of reproductive age. Women with a septate uterus may be at increased risk for subfertility, pregnancy loss, preterm birth and fetal malpresentation. A uterine septum can be removed surgically but we do not know whether this improves reproductive outcomes such as enhancing fertility or reducing the likelihood of miscarriage. We want to look at the reproductive outcomes of all women diagnosed from 2008-2018 with a septate uterus, whether undergoing surgical removal or not ('expectant management') at the Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital.
