Research summary
In this study, children with social and communication disorders who have been referred to an NHS Child Development Centre will be assessed using the ABLLS-R (Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised) prior to undergoing a parent training intervention. The ABLLS-R is a criterion based assessment of behvaiour and development and can be used to assess and monitor children's progress. Parent training will be offered to parents of such children, in their own homes and will consist of evidence-based child teaching techniques, motivating children to learn, behaviour management, skills-based teaching etc. The ABLLS-R will be used to re-assess children's progress after six months, in order to monitor what gains have been made in the interim period.
Previously, the ABLLS-R has been utilised to evaluate Centre-based group interventions, however, at the present time it is not possible to offer this. Research indicates that parent training can be an effective method for teaching children new skills. We plan to compare the results of the current cohort with the results of the previous cohort. It is planned to enlist the help of an ABA Master's student from Bangor University to evaluate the data systematically.REC name
