  • Research summary

How and to what extent do patients with kidney disease value the use of PatientView in their self-care practice?

The increasing number of people with a long-term illness, both nationally and internationally, is having an impact on the way in which health care is provided. Patients are being encouraged to take a more active role in their health care management, and one such way is through access to their health care record. PatientView is a web-based system (known as a patient portal) which allows patients to look at their blood tests and information about their illness. It has potential for benefit in long-term care. However, there is a lack of research to demonstrate how patients make use of PatientView or how it improves their self-care. This research will explore how patients with kidney disease use information gained from PatientView to look after themselves better. This is important as it will help to develop the use of such systems and encourage their use by other people with long-term illness.
Adult patients with kidney disease from a National Health Service hospital on the South East Coast of England will be asked to take part. Both users and non-users of PatientView will be able to participate. This will involve interviews for both groups. The researcher will also ask users of PatientView to demonstrate what they look at on PatientView. The interviews are expected to last for 30-60 minutes and will only be for one occasion.

This research is part of a Masters course funded by the National Institute of Health Research.
