Research summary
The current Covid-19 pandemic has created an increase in demand for Intensive Care Units (ICUs). These units were already hard-pressed, yet for the foreseeable future will be under pressure to deal with not only Covid-19 patients but also their normal patient populations and a backlog of patients whose surgical procedures have been cancelled this year as a result of the pandemic.\n\nIn order to assist doctors and nurses in the ICU of the Bristol Royal Infirmary at this difficult time, software has been developed for the iPads and other mobile devices in the ICU that brings all the relevant sources of information (such as patient vital signs, test results, ventilator settings) into one view. This “dashboard” is intended to reduce staff workload by reducing the time spent interrogating different systems and displays.\n\nThe piece of research described here aims to understand whether this dashboard has indeed been useful in practice. Clinical staff who have used the dashboard will be invited to participate and interviewed in order to hear their views. The findings from these interviews will help ensure that future dashboards meet the needs and expectations of clinical users in the ICU. \n
