Research summary
The University of Portsmouth Dental Academy (UPDA) is a state funded NHS primary dental care service provider and undergraduate training centre for dental professionals. Patients at UPDA are provided with NHS services free at the point of delivery.
UPDA uses clinical software developed by Carestream Ltd. This electronic system is used to submit claims and reports to the National Health Service Business Service Authority (NHS BSA) for remuneration. For improved quality and governance a system of warehousing has been developed by the University of Portsmouth Information Services to allow for monitoring of services provision, key performance indicators and student activity. It is this administrative data warehouse which will provide data for the proposed research exercise.
This patient data, including their profile, treatment, medical history and provider background will consolidated into a central database and then augmented with census data to provide insight into social environmental factors related to the patient. The data will be validated and then anonymised. This data set will be used to answer a series of questions related to patient disease risk, treatment outcomes and skill mix based on their dental attendance at UPDA. This exercise will inform future plans to integrate these dental data to other general health records. The project will run for 2 years and examine data from April 2007 until March 2018.
