  • Research summary

We have secured funding to purchase and install air purifier units (Rensair Compact air purifier units) in the homes of children and young people with asthma attending our clinic. The objective is to assess whether installing air purifier units results in improved outcomes for children with asthma. The air purifier will be installed in their homes by the Rensair Ltd. company and instruct families on how to safely use them. We will ask them to run the air purifier all of the time in quiet mode. We will cover the running costs of running the air purifier. We will have them installed for a period of one year. We will collect data at baseline to assess number of asthma attacks, their lung function (already taken as part of their clinical care) and number of courses of oral steroids they needed to take in the last year. We will follow them up every 3 months (either if this falls in line with their clinic appointment or we will arrange a time convenient for the family) to assess how many asthma attacks the have had, how many courses of steroids and also their lung function (which is taken as part of their routine clinic appointment). We will also ask children and their parents/families if they find using an air purifier in their home acceptable. After the one year study period is over we will analyse the data to see if the use of an air purifier in their home improved their asthma outcomes. No extra clinical tests will be performed as part of this research, we will use routine collected data that is already obtained during their normal clinic visits.
