  • Research summary

Specialist Care Services at South London and the Maudsley provide care for patients fully funded by the NHS under continuing care arrangements. Residents can be grouped into three main groups; those with severe dementia, those with dementia and functional illness and those with purely functional illness. The majority of residents have a diagnosis of dementia with varying degrees of behavioural disturbance, and a need for a patient experience measure for use with patients with severe cognitive impairment has been identified.
The Patient Experience Data Intelligence Centre (PEDIC) is one of the tools currently used by South London and Maudsley to capture patient feedback on their experience. Previous work found that whilst engaging with this tool in 2011-2012 it became apparent that it was not appropriate for use for the large majority of residents under the care of specialist care services as they were unable to communicate to the level required, and a need for a proxy measure of experience and quality of life was identified.
We plan to do a small feasibility and usability study of an adapted version of a previously developed wellbeing scale
(The Bradford Wellbeing Scale), to assess its potential for use as an outcome measure for patients with advanced dementia under the care of specialist care services. This measure has good face validity for use as a proxy measure of Social Care REC Form Reference:
