Research summary
Men diagnosed with prostate cancer understandably often choose treatments that are most likely to get rid of the cancer, but prostate removal, for example, can change urinary function in the long term as a side effect. The difference in symptoms has been measured, but there is no information about how prostate removal affects urinary frequency and flow rate.\n\nWe will recruit 40 men due to undergo prostate removal for prostate cancer. We will measure their urinary frequency and flow rate before and after surgery using a portable home-based flowmeter. We will use this information to create a leaflet for men who are deciding which prostate cancer treatment to have.\n\nWe will also hold focus groups with men who have had their prostates removed, and those who are scheduled for this, to make sure that the leaflet is easy to read and contains information that these men think is important. (This will take place 9-10 months after the start of the study. The focus group topic guides will therefore be submitted later as a substantial amendment, along with the patient-facing documentation and further details of the methodology.)
